The Value of a Mindful Pause

Viktor Frankl had it right.

The psychiatrist, neurologist, and philosopher Viktor Frankl is credited with saying, “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to chose our response. In our response lies our growth and freedom.”

Mindfulness helps to create and empower the space between stimulus and action. In doing so, mindfulness offers the possibility of living in response to experience rather than in reaction to it.

More on Mindfulness

Mindfulness can be a game-changer.

Mindfulness is an innate human capacity to be more aware of what we are experiencing inside ourselves – body, mind, heart, spirit – and around us – people, environments, situations and circumstances. Mindfulness begins with self-awareness. Being self-aware enables us to consciously choose how best to respond to people and circumstances.

Practicing mindfulness supports making better choices. Mindfulness helps us to recognize and deal with our thoughts, feelings and physical sensations. With greater awareness and self-regulation, we are better able to make sense of people and the matters-at-hand. Our perceptions are cleaner, clearer, less clouded by our usual filters and biases. As we practice mindfulness, we see things that ordinarily would pass us by and gain access to greater understanding and insight. We are empowered to make better choices as a result.

Making better choices moment-by-moment charts the course of our lives and supports well-being all along the journey.

What is financial wellness?

Financial wellness is a fundamental dimension of the wellness framework and philosophy.

Financial wellness is an actionable framework supportive of an ongoing process of financial well-being. It is characterized by elements or facets which can serve as useful criteria for exploration, evaluation and direction.

Objective indicators of financial wellness include adhering to a spending and budgeting plan, maintaining reasonably low debt, and keeping an active savings and retirement plan. Subjective perceptions include contentment with present and anticipated future financial life and low levels of existing financial stress. Financial wellness also underscores recognizing the necessity of utilizing trusted and knowledgeable sources of support as needed, and cultivating the knowledge, skills and capacities supportive of financial self-care.

Analogous to a guiding light, a polestar in the darken night sky, financial wellness provides a means of ongoing, unfolding orientation and guidance; a steady reference point locating where you are and indicating the best direction forward. Practicing financial wellness supports a conscious, self-defined, self-directed, and evolving process that encourages mental, emotional, physical and relational health.
