Mindfulness is an innate human capacity to be more aware of what we are experiencing inside ourselves – body, mind, heart, spirit – and around us – people, environments, situations and circumstances. Mindfulness begins with self-awareness. Being self-aware enables us to consciously choose how best to respond to people and circumstances.
Practicing mindfulness supports making better choices. Mindfulness helps us to recognize and deal with our thoughts, feelings and physical sensations. With greater awareness and self-regulation, we are better able to make sense of people and the matters-at-hand. Our perceptions are cleaner, clearer, less clouded by our usual filters and biases. As we practice mindfulness, we see things that ordinarily would pass us by and gain access to greater understanding and insight. We are empowered to make better choices as a result.
